What are the different types of leather? What do the leather descriptions mean?

Basic Leather Knowledge

  • Top Grain is literally the “top or outside” of the hide. This is the most valuable, durable part of a hide.
  • Split Grain is what remains after the top grain has been removed from the hide. The split is often used on the back and sides to create cost savings. While the feel is different, it is 100% leather.
  • Full Grain is a top grain leather that has not been corrected leaving the natural grain and markings to be seen. They have the softest and smoothest touch and highest value. Three percent of all hides have the qualities necessary to become full grain leathers.
  • Corrected Grain is a top grain that has been sanded down to reduce some of the visual and natural characteristics of the hide. This is the most commonly used leather for upholstery.
  • Aniline Dying is the process of putting hides in a drum and allowing the dye to soak completely into the hide. This allows all natural characteristics to show.
  • Semi Aniline is when a hide is aniline dyed, then a matching pigment layer is added to even out the color and add protection, decreasing the natural qualities of the hide.
  • Hand Antiqued is the process of hand rubbing a contrasting color onto the surface of the leather to enhance the natural grain.
  • Pull Up is an aniline dyed leather that has been waxed or oiled. When the leather is pulled, the oil/wax separates causing the colors to lighten.
  • Scars, Growth Marks, Veins and Brands all result from the life of the animal. These are part of virtually every hide.
  • Color Variations occur in all types of leather, especially aniline leathers. During the dyeing process, each hide absorbs the dye in varying amounts. This is not a material defect but evidence that the leather is natural.
